On the Mendips – May 2016

Sunday 22nd May 2016

It’s not that often I go walking on the very hills that are only a stone’s throw from my home. But having suffered with a cold for the past week, lying low on energy levels and having hurt my back; I didn’t feel like travelling or walking too far.

Starting from Burrington Combe after a ten-minute drive, I was to embark on a unusually short adventure up and over the Mendip Hills.

Up on the Mendips – November 2015

Sunday 15th November 2015

This weekend, I’m planning a walk down on the Quantocks and so, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to write about my previous walk only a ten-minute drive from home!

I’ve been to this part of the Mendip Hills so many times in the last three-years that I feel it would be futile to attempt another extensive walkthrough on this page. Instead, I’m going to select a succession of my favourite photos, picking out the highlights and favourable sights from along the way.

…Some may say this is what I do in a walking blog post anyway! ;-P

Bristol Walking Festival

This year’s Bristol Walking Festival is already under way and will continue up until the end of May. With many events and a variety of walks happening all through each week, it’s a great opportunity for Bristolians to get out, get walking, to explore a part of the city (or surrounding countryside) and perhaps learn something new, whilst sharing with a group of other people. Most events are free, with walks ranging from as brief as one-mile to anything over ten.

On Sunday, I made my first outing to one of these events – which was conveniently hosted by my own walking group (Brunel 20s and 30s) and aptly titled the ‘Mendips Wellbeing Walk‘. Read more of this post

New Year’s Eve Walk

It was the final day in a year from which I can retain many positive memories with great feelings of personal achievement. As someone who isn’t overly social and continually abstains from alcohol though, what else was I going to do to on such an occasion but to head off on a rather extensive walk?!

This one began in my current home-village of Wrington. My car remained stationary; my walking boots were on before I departed out through the front door.

Summer Solstice Walk 2014

Almost two-months have since passed. Living in the south-west of England, it’s clear that the dreaded long nights are already beginning to draw in. But at least the weather’s holding up (it could be colder…).

This is going to be a recollection of a walk I did on the evening of the Summer Solstice earlier this year. It began in my current home village of Wrington and continues up on to perhaps the most commonly known heights of the Mendips. These photos begin as I made my way across the A38, heading south.

Autumn on the Mendips?

My blog’s not as busy as it has been in the past but I do expect that to improve over the winter. Behind the scenes (as it were); there are lots of little things going on and I do have one or two big, half-expected announcements to make between now and Christmas… All in good time. My blog will always continue, even if the content happens to vary. Likewise, with my other social networks and of course, my YouTube channel; I will endeavour to keep them all alive.

Searching for autumn up on the Mendip Hills

I took some overdue time off work this week. My initial plan was to get out and to do lots of walking (it’s good for the mind and body) but with a consistent downpour until Wednesday, I felt defeated but eventually got around to assessing a couple of areas and making some tough decisions. Anyway, on Tuesday afternoon and in spite of the grey clouds overheard I thought, ‘Sod it!’, donned my waterproofs, grabbed my bag and went off for a short afternoon walk.
