Yin and Yang Bandsaw Boxes (Part 1)

It’s been a fortnight since I uploaded this first video to YouTube and I had hoped that the second instalment would be ready to upload this evening… Well, it hasn’t quite worked out that way – and it has taken me this long to get around to writing about it!

Here it is, for those of you who haven’t already seen it across my social media sites.

Book Box Balls-Up

In my last update, I believe the pair of book boxes I was making were edging close to completion (or, at least, the finishing stage). That was over two-months ago and, even though I’ve since effectively closed the door on that workshop for the time being, I can tell you that I worked on three separate (and a-little-bit-secret) items during the closing weeks.

Today’s update concludes the book box project for the time being.

YouTube Update – August 2013

Since my last video update, I seem to have added two more films to my YouTube channel – I guess this delay in notifying you is another reason for you to PLEASE SUBSCRIBE to my channel, so that you find out before… You do?

I’d like to say a big THANK YOU for everyone has already subscribed because I have just this week passed the 600 mark – at this rate, I might just make it to 1,000 before 2014! 😉

My first video is the making of the toilet roll holder, which has already soared to almost 1,000 views in less than one week! It’s a ‘silent’ film, in the sense that I don’t narrate over or talk through any part of it. Some people dislike that but most seem welcome to it, judging by my current response. I’m always welcome to hearing what more people think and I’m keen to keep trying new things in future videos.

After that, you have a near-ten-minute film on setting the knives in my Axminster AW106PT, which I use solely as a thicknesser. I do talk through that one (a non-narration) and again, I’m always welcome to feedback on that as well.

I’m aiming to have a brand-new project-based video out by… Let’s say Monday night, as it is a Bank Holiday weekend! 😉

Thanks for reading, watching, subscribing, liking and have a great weekend! 🙂

Gromit Hunting (Part 1)

Saturday’s group walk (a day earlier than usually expected) involving wandering around the city of Bristol with our cameras at the ready as we sought out and snapped as many Gromits as we could find along a seven-mile route. If you’ve no idea what I’m talking about then Gromit (the dog of Wallace and Gromit fame) has been unleashed amongst the city of Bristol and also slightly further afield! There are 80 to find in total but this walk wasn’t about catching them all – that would’ve meant a train journey to London’s Paddington Station, for one thing!

How many have you found?

New Project – Any Guesses?

I’m writing this post to ask whether anyone reading this can guess what I might be making?

Stack-laminating American lime – but for what?

It’s a way to use up my collection of American lime (basswood) offcuts (although, that has little relevance). I’m stack-laminating them in such a way because I do not have anything as substantial available as a stock size. I think I’ve added two more layers since taking this photo but the height or depth is not critical.

Obviously, once I’ve finished laminating, I’m going to have to cut it in some way, if you notice all the overhang…

Thank you for reading. I look forward to reading your suggestions! 😉

Yandles Spring Show – 5th-6th April 2013

Earlier today, I did indeed complete the drive south down to Yandles for the annual spring woodworking show (they also hold an autumn show in September, in case you didn’t know.

While I was there, I made the brave effort to get my camera out and to shoot a brief sequence of video clips that would give an impression of what’s available at one of these shows. It was a big step for me and I had to overcome a lot of anxiety to simply get my camera out of its bag, whilst walking alone through such a heavily occupied arena. Above, you can see the results of my work and an hour’s worth of editing this evening.

There’s a little more detail to follow if you read on below this line but I do welcome your comments, thoughts, opinions and feedback. 🙂

New Direction?

Following on from yesterday’s post [I know, two posts in consecutive days!!], I’d like to try and think about where this blog will go next, once I’ve walked away from my workshop.
