Southern Quantocks – June 2016 (Part 1)

I sit down to write this, twenty-four hours after leading the group on this very walk in the southern half of the Quantock Hills. It was only eight-days ago that I finalised this route, having spent the previous months pre-walking, only to arrive at broken stiles and horridly overgrown footpaths.

Arlington Court (Part 1)

Sunday 21st June 2015

This goes back my last day down in Exmoor, when I decided I would make good use of my newly-acquired National Trust membership. By now, I’d already packed up, loaded the boot of my car and was setting off in a westerly direction towards Barnstaple; leaving Somerset for North Devon.

I arrived at Arlington Court about five-minutes after they’d opened. The free car park had tonnes of space and despite crossing counties, it was only a thirty-minute drive from my campsite in Exford.

Early Signs of Spring

After a fortnight of not-going-very-far, I headed out to the south Cotswolds on Sunday and to meet up with a friend I hadn’t seen in a while. Saturday was cold, grey, miserable and… Very cold! So, to awaken to sunshine the next day was a delight and, by the time we arrived in the village of Badminton by late morning, I realised I wouldn’t be needing to wear my coat on top of layers consisting of a fleece and long-sleeved T-shirt.

New Year’s Eve Walk

It was the final day in a year from which I can retain many positive memories with great feelings of personal achievement. As someone who isn’t overly social and continually abstains from alcohol though, what else was I going to do to on such an occasion but to head off on a rather extensive walk?!

This one began in my current home-village of Wrington. My car remained stationary; my walking boots were on before I departed out through the front door.
